Day 6
Sacred Valley – Machu Picchu
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
At a coordinated time, transfer from your hotel to Ollantaytambo train station to board the first-class train to Machu Picchu, a great World Heritage Site. This archaeological site was hidden for centuries, until it came to light during the early 1900s, by the famous discoverer Hiram Bingham. It is impossible to describe in words, how you will feel when faced with the citadel, a huge complex located between the mountains and the jungle and a wonderful challenge to your imagination. Lunch on board. Upon arrival at Aguas Calientes, reception at the train station and transfer uphill to Machu Picchu (approximately 30 minutes). On arrival to Machu Picchu, you will begin your tour of the Citadel where you will appreciate the history of this enigmatic and impressive place. The citadel was built on a very special spot covered in vegetation between two mountains: the Machu Picchu (old mountain) and Huayna Picchu (young mountain), at the foot of which meanders the Urubamba or Vilcanota River (lower Jungle featuring abundant flora and fauna). Then if you would like could hike to “Inca Bridge”, the entire trail is built into the cliffs on the western approach to Machu Picchu, snaking impressively along the side of a sheer mountainside. Most of the narrow path is in a state of disrepair and is not accessible. But the last part, which leads into Machu Picchu, has been restored, along with the so-called Inca Bridge — a 20-foot gap in the trail spanned by four or five planks of wood. In the afternoon, you will return to hotel in Aguas Calientes. Enjoy the facilities of the hotel. Dinner is included at the hotel. Overnight.
Accommodation: Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo (or similar)
Day 7
Machu Picchu – Cusco
Breakfast
Today, you will have a second opportunity to visit the ruins of Machu Picchu and walk through the Sun Gate and admire the citadel from the top. You can also walk towards the Sanctuary to the starting point to climb up the Huayna Picchu Mountain (for those who would like to visit/climb) it is important an early morning rise to take the shuttle bus to the archaeological site of Machu Picchu as only a limited number of visitors per day are allowed. The climb to the peak takes about an hour for a person of an average fitness level; the climb is on a steep rock staircase with great views throughout the journey. There are cables attached to the rock in many places to help the climber and there are places to step aside to catch your breath and enjoy the view. To reach the very top you must climb through a very narrow tunnel, through the rock, on your hands and knees, it will be challenging but the effort will be worth it once you get to the top. In the afternoon, you will board your train back to Cusco. Upon arrival, reception and transfer to your hotel in Cusco.
